AI Use Disclosure
How optional AI assistance works in Byleron Research, and what remains under your control.
Last updated: 13 August 2026AI is optional
Quick research, browsing sources, and your PDF library do not require AI. No research material is sent to an AI provider unless you intentionally start an AI-assisted feature, such as Pro or Deep research, Chat with Research, or Craft.
What may be sent when you use AI
The exact scope depends on the task. It can include your research question, the abstracts or text of sources you selected or that were retrieved for your query, relevant excerpts from PDFs in your library, prior conversation context in Chat with Research, and citation metadata needed to prepare the requested output. The workspace uses the OpenAI API for these features.
The assistant is designed to use the scope you select and does not independently browse unrelated research records. You should still avoid uploading confidential material or content for which you do not have an appropriate right to process with an external AI provider.
What AI can and cannot do
AI can suggest search strategies, synthesise findings across selected sources, compare evidence, answer follow-up questions grounded in your selected sources, generate citations, and draft text in Craft. Suggestions are provisional. You decide whether to accept, reject, edit, or include any generated material in your work.
AI output can be incomplete, inaccurate, biased, or inappropriate for your methodological approach. It is not a substitute for research judgement, source verification, ethics review, legal advice, statistical testing, or professional interpretation.
Your responsibilities
- Review every generated claim, quotation, citation, and synthesised comparison before relying on it.
- Check quotations and claims against the original source rather than treating AI output as a conclusion.
- Only upload PDFs and documents you have the right to use.
- Disclose AI use in your academic work where your institution, funder, publisher, or methodology requires it.
